BRYCE HOSPITAL
OPEN 24 HOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK
Bryce Hospital, originally established in Tuscaloosa during the 1850s and inaugurated in 1861 as the Alabama State Hospital for the Insane, is currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration process, being dismantled down to its framework. The University of Alabama acquired the premises in 2010 and embarked on a $40 million rehabilitation project for the principal four-story hospital building along with four out of the original six wings. This restoration is a segment of a broader $121 million initiative, which also envisages the construction of a new performing arts center on the site. University of Alabama planner, Dan Wolfe, mentioned that the historic hospital structures are slated to serve multiple new purposes, including functioning as a university welcome center, housing museums dedicated to mental health and the university’s history, providing event spaces, and facilitating classrooms for performing arts students.
