Established in November 2019 through the acquisition of former KentuckyOne/Catholic Health Initiatives Louisville assets by University Medical Center, UofL Health stands as an academic medical health system headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Rooted in a rich 200-year legacy, its origins trace back to the founding of the Louisville Marine Hospital in 1823.
Originally established to aid sick and injured crew members abandoned in Louisville while navigating the Ohio River, the Louisville Marine Hospital served as Kentucky’s inaugural hospital. Renamed Louisville City Hospital in 1836, it later became the teaching hospital for the Louisville Medical Institute, which eventually evolved into the UofL School of Medicine, the nation’s ninth oldest medical school, inaugurated in 1837.
Renowned for its excellence in medical care, UofL Hospital holds the distinction of being the first Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Kentucky and serves as the region’s sole Level I Trauma Center. It ranks as the fifth largest hospital in the region. For a deeper dive into UofL Hospital’s illustrious history, visit UofLHealth.org/200.
