The Cherokee Mental Health Institute embarks on a transformative journey as it shifts its focus from pediatric to adult forensic care, marking a significant evolution in its role within the mental health landscape. Under the guidance of MHI Business Manager Chris Tofteberg, the institution is meticulously orchestrating the relocation of its child patients to Independence, the state’s sole remaining mental health hospital for adolescents, situated four hours east. With only two children remaining as of October 25th, and three already transferred to Independence, the Cherokee facility is poised to specialize exclusively in adult forensic treatment, anticipating the arrival of new adult patients as part of this transition.

As the institute prepares for its scheduled “go-live” date of November 1st, Tofteberg underscores the complexity of the undertaking, emphasizing the extensive coordination required for a seamless transition. With the cessation of adolescent care, the institution faces a shift in operational dynamics, necessitating adjustments to its existing framework. Despite the challenges, the Cherokee Mental Health Institute remains steadfast in its commitment to providing education services mandated by law, ensuring that patients aged 18 to 21 with individualized education plans continue to receive academic support.
