COLONEL ROBERT L. HOWARD STATE VETERANS HOME
The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) owns and governs the Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home, located in Pell City, AL. This 254 bed facility features skilled care, memory care, and domiciliary care all arranged in a “small house” or neighborhood setting. A large town center with a stone fireplace brings an instant feeling of warmth and community. Veterans love to gather in the “Stars and Stripes Café” to share a beverage and catch a ball game. Located over an hour outside of Birmingham, this is the most recent and modern State Veteran Home built by the ADVA and US Department of Veterans Affairs in Alabama.
The sprawling Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home provides a sense of community living connected within a town-like setting, including Main Street and the Town Center, the Veterans home is comprised of small groups of bedrooms arranged consecutively into units called houses, which are grouped together to form neighborhoods. More like a small village, each of the five neighborhoods provides wide corridors, patios and landscaped courtyards so residents can feel connected to the outside world. In addition to providing more efficient and convenient care to residents, support spaces are also included within each neighborhood to serve the emotional and physical needs of each resident.
