Memory care is a form of senior living that provides intensive, specialized care for people with memory issues. It is a specific type of long-term care designed to meet the needs of individuals that have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other types of memory problems and is provided in a secured environment by specially trained staff in a shared or private room.

​It has set routines designed to lower stress for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Employees provide meals and help residents with personal care tasks, just like the staff at an assisted living facility. But, they are also specially trained to deal with the unique issues that often arise as a result of dementia or Alzheimer’s. They check in with residents more frequently and provide extra structure and support to help them navigate their day.

​Staff working in memory care communities, from the administrator to the housekeepers, are required by most states to attend extensive training classes that include topics ranging from the science of dementia to empathy activities aimed to demonstrate what it is like living with the disease.

​Memory care communities feature extra safety precautions such as door alarms, as well as environmental considerations such as motion-censored lights or one-touch sinks. These extra touches not only allow residents to have a safer living experience, but also one that best allows for independence.

​The monthly cost associated with memory care runs anywhere between $3,700 and $7,000 per month, with the average cost being closer to $5,000 each month.
